Product Information

Black pepper (Piper nigrum), universally celebrated as the "King of Spices," is one of the oldest, most traded, and most influential spices in human history. Belonging to the Piperaceae family, black pepper is a woody, climbing vine native to the tropical rainforests of the Malabar Coast of India (present-day Kerala). Throughout history, its immense economic value drove global exploration, shaped ancient trade routes, and even served as a form of currency. Botanical Profile and Cultivation The black pepper plant is a perennial, climbing vine that attaches itself to supporting trees, poles, or trellis structures using adventitious roots. In ideal conditions, the vine can grow up to 10 meters (33 feet) high, featuring dark green, alternate leaves and small, white flowers clustered on drooping spikes called catkins. Climate and Soil Requirements: Pepper thrives in hot, humid tropical climates with annual rainfall ranging from 2,000 to 3,000 mm. It requires rich, well-drained loamy soils high in organic matter and a slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5 to 6.5). Growth and Yield: The vines begin to bear small, green drupes (berries) roughly three to four years after planting. These drupes grow in long clusters (spikes), containing anywhere from 50 to 60 individual berries per spike. Global Production: While native to India, black pepper is now widely cultivated across the global tropical belt. Major producers include Vietnam (the world's largest exporter), Brazil, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia.
